Barbra Streisand was born Barbara Joan Streisand, 24 April 1942 is an American singer, actress, director and songwriter. She has won two Oscars, eight Grammy Awards, four Emmy Awards, a special Tony Award, an American Film Institute Award and Peabody Award.
She was the second of three children. Fifteen months later, Emmanuel died of a brain hemorrhage and his family were near poverty. She attended Erasmus Hall High School in Brooklyn, and joined the Freshman Chorus and the Choral Club. Streisand was a nightclub singer while in her teens.
Streisand's first TV appearance was on The Tonight Show, then host Jack Paar in 1961, singing Harold Arlen's A sleeping bee. Streisand has recorded 35 albums, almost all with Columbia Records. Her vocal talents prevailed and she gained newfound success with pop and ballad-oriented Richard Perry-produced album Stoney End in 1971.
